A fatal motorcycle accident on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) in British Columbia has prompted an ongoing investigation by police and the province’s police watchdog after a deadly collision near Porteau Cove, south of Squamish. The crash resulted in the death of a female motorcyclist and forced the closure of the highway for several hours, leaving thousands of motorists stranded overnight.

Fatal Motorcycle Collision on Highway 99

According to the British Columbia RCMP, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. when a BC Highway Patrol officer conducting speed enforcement observed two motorcycles allegedly travelling at excessive speeds and driving erratically along Highway 99.

Police say the motorcycles failed to stop when an officer attempted a traffic stop. Moments later, one of the motorcycles collided with a recreational vehicle near Deeks Creek Bridge, south of Porteau Cove. Officers immediately responded and provided emergency medical assistance, but the female rider was pronounced dead at the scene.

Highway Closed for Hours

The collision forced the complete closure of the Sea to Sky Highway between Horseshoe Bay and Squamish while emergency crews, collision reconstruction specialists, and investigators processed the scene.

DriveBC later confirmed that Highway 99 reopened at approximately 2:00 a.m., though significant traffic congestion remained for several hours as stranded motorists slowly cleared the corridor.

Police Watchdog Investigation

Because police interaction occurred before the collision, the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been notified and has launched an independent investigation into the actions of the attending officer.

The IIO is responsible for investigating incidents involving police where serious injury or death may have resulted from an officer’s actions or inactions. At the same time, BC Highway Patrol continues its own investigation into the circumstances of the collision.

Witnesses Asked to Come Forward

Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed the motorcycles travelling along Highway 99 between Britannia Beach and the crash location, or who may have dashcam footage from the area, to contact BC Highway Patrol.

Authorities say public assistance may help investigators establish the complete sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.

Investigation Continues

Officials have not released the identity of the deceased motorcyclist, pending notification of next of kin and the ongoing investigation.

The Sea to Sky Highway has since reopened to traffic, but investigators continue working to determine all factors that contributed to the fatal crash. Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses
